| | DragonForce - "Fury of the Storm" | ] | I'm going to be going back to Alma College for Homecoming this year. It turned out perfectly, since St. Norbert College (where I'm going now for my teacher certification) for some reason has October 8th & 9th off from classes, and I have the days off from work too. So I happen to have a 4-day weekend the same weekend as Alma's Homecoming. I'll be heading over on Thursday (and hope I can find a place to sleep for the weekend). I think this may end up being one of my last years visiting, since the last of my friends from there are graduating this year. But perhaps we may have some alumni reunions in future years.
Here's hoping I get to see a lot of other alums at Homecoming this year. |

| | Weird Al Yankovic - "White & Nerdy" | ] | Well, it's been a couple months since I've said anything on here. Probably not quite a personal record yet though.
Well, GenCon Indy 2009 starts in 2 days. This year we've got a group of 6 going (as opposed to the usual 3 or so), so that should be pretty interesting. This year was the first time I actually managed to pre-register for events, so I'll actually be getting into games I picked ahead of time and that I know I will enjoy. Although, past experience has shown I always have a blast at GenCon even without pre-registering. I guess it's just good to be among thousands of my own kind (I just wish more of them would wear deodorant and take regular showers).
Also, I'm kinda excited about a little game I put together for the 6 of us to play back in the hotel rooms at night. It uses the rules from D&D 4th Edition, but I put it in a Steampunk setting. So I had to make up some new classes (such as a Steam Rifleman, Flamethrower, and Engineer), and give them some new powers based on steampunk technology instead of magic and strength. I think it's come together nicely. Should be fun times for all. If anyone's interested, just let me know, and I can email you the classes I created, along with their respective class features, attack and utility powers, and weapons, etc.
Aside from GenCon, most of what's been going on with me has just been taking summer classes, working, and gaming every other weekend. But my summer classes are all done with now, and I still have about 3 weeks until fall classes start. Just going to work every day and not having to do homework or go to class already feels like a vacation. I only have one more semester of education classes to go, then student teaching, and I'll be a certified History/English teacher come June 2010. Go me! I still can't believe anyone will ever trust me with the minds of a large group of students.
I've started up my D&D 3.5 game again as of yesterday. We took a sabbatical from that game for a few months since I couldn't balance school, work, and also GMing and preparing game sessions every week. So in the meantime, we played a Deadlands game for a while, as well as some short-lived 4th Edition D&D games. I admit I had my doubts about 4th Edition at first. But going back to playing 3.5 after playing quite a bit of 4th Ed, I have completely changed my mind about it. 3.5 is too horribly complex in comparison (there are so many specific little nitpicky rules that they either totally got rid of or just simplified in 4th Ed). So, I think I may have become a 4th Ed convert, especially in light of how user-friendly is for modification (as can be seen by my steampunk version).
Is it sad that my social life for the past couple years has almost entirely consisted of gaming with the same groups of guys?
Oh well, I'm not complaining. It just means that I don't have any relationship angst to post for your entertainment, so nyah. I've been very happy being single for quite some time, and I see no reason to shake things up.
Anyway, I think I've rambled enough to make up for not posting anything in over 2 months (if anyone even reads this anymore). My next post will probably be my traditional annual day-by-day explanation of what I did at GenCon. Look forward to it! *shakes fist* I said: "LOOK FORWARD TO IT! ...jerks... |

Your result for Which fantasy writer are you?...
Michael Moorcock (b. 1939)11 High-Brow, 17 Violent, -1 Experimental and 29 Cynical!
Congratulations! You are High-Brow, Violent, Traditional and Cynical! These concepts are defined below. Michael Moorcock is one of the most influential fantasy writers of all times, his impact rivalling that of Tolkien's. Perhaps China Miéville described it best when he said: "I think we are all post-Moorcock." Apart from being the editor of New Worlds twice in the 60s and 70s, thereby being instrumental in bringing on the so-called "new wave" of science fiction which changed all fantastic literature forever, Moorcock's own work has been an inspiration to more recent writers. He is also known for not hiding or blunting his views on fiction which he regards as inferior, a trait which has lead him to apply harsh criticism on authors such as J R R Tolkien, C S Lewis an H P Lovecraft. His most popular work are the Elric books. Elric was originally conceived as a sort of critical comment to or even parody of R E Howard's Conan, but the character and his world soon grew to form a tragic and somewhat fatalistic drama. Elric's world is, in turn, only a small part of the huge Multiverse, a set of stories from all sorts of worlds (including our own) which is forever locked in a struggle between the two powers of Law and Chaos. Whenever one of these powers is threatening to become too powerful, an incarnation of the Eternal Champion, a group of warriors possessing the same spirit, is forced to fight to maintain the delicate balance between the two. Moorcock has worked several of his heroes into this cycle of books, including Hawkmoon, Corum and, of course, Elric. Moorcock's stories are often stories about warriors, however reluctant they may be, and are usually explicitly violent, even if the purpose of all the hacking and slashing is to free humans and other beings from oppression and, ultimately, fear. There is little happiness, though, for those who are forced to do the fighting and all they can hope for is a short time of respite, sometimes in the town of Tanelorn, the only place in the multiverse that the eternal struggle between Law and Chaos can't reach. It should also be mentioned that, even though Moorcock has done quite some experimenting in his days, it can't be ignored that a major part of his books are traditional adventure stories that become more than that by their inclusion into a grand vision. A little ironically , perhaps, for an author who has criticized the "world-building school" of fantasy, Moorcock achieves much of his popularity through building, if not a world, a world vision. You are also a lot like China Miéville If you want something more gentle, try Ursula K le Guin If you'd like a challenge, try your exact opposite, Katharine Kerr Your score This is how to interpret your score: Your attitudes have been measured on four different scales, called 1) High-Brow vs. Low-Brow, 2) Violent vs. Peaceful, 3) Experimental vs. Traditional and 4) Cynical vs. Romantic. Imagine that when you were born, you were in a state of innocence, a tabula rasa who would have scored zero on each scale. Since then, a number of circumstances (including genetic, cultural and environmental factors) have pushed you towards either end of these scales. If you're at 45 or -45 you would be almost entirely cynical, low-brow or whatever. The closer to zero you are, the less extreme your attitude. However, you should always be more of either (eg more romantic than cynical). Please note that even though High-Brow, Violent, Experimental and Cynical have positive numbers (1 through 45) and their opposites negative numbers (-1 through -45), this doesn't mean that either quality is better. All attitudes have their positive and negative sides, as explained below. High-Brow vs. Low-Brow You received 11 points, making you more High-Brow than Low-Brow. Being high-browed in this context refers to being more fascinated with the sort of art that critics and scholars tend to favour, rather than the best-selling kind. At their best, high-brows are cultured, able to appreciate the finer nuances of literature and not content with simplifications. At their worst they are, well, snobs. Violent vs. Peaceful You received 17 points, making you more Violent than Peaceful. Please note that violent in this context does not mean that you, personally, are prone to violence. This scale is a measurement of a) if you are tolerant to violence in fiction and b) whether you see violence as a means that can be used to achieve a good end. If you are, and you do, then you are violent as defined here. At their best, violent people are the heroes who don't hesitate to stop the villain threatening innocents by means of a good kick. At their worst, they are the villains themselves. Experimental vs. Traditional You received -1 points, making you more Traditional than Experimental. Your position on this scale indicates if you're more likely to seek out the new and unexpected or if you are more comfortable with the familiar, especially in regards to culture. Note that traditional as defined here does not equal conservative, in the political sense. At their best, traditional people don't change winning concepts, favouring storytelling over empty poses. At their worst, they are somewhat narrow-minded. Cynical vs. Romantic You received 29 points, making you more Cynical than Romantic. Your position on this scale indicates if you are more likely to be wary, suspicious and skeptical to people around you and the world at large, or if you are more likely to believe in grand schemes, happy endings and the basic goodness of humankind. It is by far the most vaguely defined scale, which is why you'll find the sentence "you are also a lot like x" above. If you feel that your position on this scale is wrong, then you are probably more like author x. At their best, cynical people are able to see through lies and spot crucial flaws in plans and schemes. At their worst, they are overly negative, bringing everybody else down. | | Suikoden II - "Gothic Neclord" | ] | A coworker brought up to me today how the phrase "spic and span" has a pretty questionable etymology. First, we have the word "spic", which we all know is a racial slur for Mexican people. Then the word "span." It has a few technical meanings. But could it perhaps be a shortened version of the word "Spaniard", maybe even meant to also be derogatory? If so, there's an obvious connection between the two words in the phrase. So apparently every time you say "spic and span", you are implying that people of Spanish descent should just be cleaning, in the roles of housemaid or janitor. Either that, or Spanish and Mexican people are supposedly very clean.
And, no, I'm not an idiot. |

| | The Lonely Island - "I'm on a Boat" | ] | So, I picked up Street Fighter IV this weekend. It's really fun, I like some of the changes they made while still keeping it true to the original feel. I like versus mode, but single player arcade mode did start to piss me off after a while. I've come to a few conclusions playing arcade mode.
First, C.Viper is one of the most annoying and cheap character to fight. Her ground punch makes it impossible to pull of a Spinning Bird or practically any of Vega's moves; you have no time to charge down, because she can hit you with this move anywhere as long as you're standing still on the ground.
The CPU really likes to pick one move and spam it over and over again, like Abel's Tornado Throw or Rufus's Messiah Kick.
And fighting Seth can be one of the most onerous tasks ever invented. The disparity of difficulty between him (after you beat him once) and any other fight is insane. Yes, I understand he's a boss and bosses are supposed to be hard. But it shouldn't take me 30 tries to beat him on Easy Mode, after I practically got Perfect in every single match previous to him. I can't imagine what he's like on Hard Mode.
Also, I could just be imagining this, but the CPU players almost seem to learn your fighting style and find ways to exploit it the more you play. For example, when fighting Seth many times, he just seems to get harder and harder each time I fight him. He suddenly stops doing the attacks that left him open and that I took advantage of before. And when he discovers a certain combo or interrupt that works particularly well against the character I'm playing, he'll start to spam it over and over in the next fight.
Anyway, I do enjoy the game. The above statements aren't really complaints, just observations. I know I have a long way to go to get better at the game, so maybe the things that seem cheap and annoying will disappear once I have a better handle on how to play. I just wish it wasn't so difficult at this point in the game to unlock all the other characters, even between both me and my brother. I have unlocked Sakura and Gen so far, but that's only 2 out of like 10 or so.
P.S. My thumb really hurts from the X-Box 360 D-pad. |

| | Megadeth - "Peace Sells" | ] | I figure I should post sometime, so people don't think I'm dead.
Not a whole lot going on right now. School's going fine. I have Spring Break in a few days. Then there's only 3 more weeks of classes, then I'm going to be assigned to a high school classroom to observe and do a little pre-student teaching for 5 weeks. As the weeks go by, I'm finding myself more and more interested in teaching. I'm really glad I've decided to go for this (even if it does mean getting some more debt).
And even though all the homework and projects get a little annoying sometimes, I am very happy to be in school again. The year off was nice, but I was starting to feel a little unfulfilled since I wasn't taking any classes (except for the short Chinese class). I guess it's just in my character to always need to be learning new things. I'm probably gonna be one of those people who keeps going to school all his life, getting degree after redundant degree.
In other news, I just saw Watchmen last Friday. I was impressed with how well they stuck to the graphic novel. It was a great movie (especially if you're a fan of the book). There were a few omissions obviously, and there was one major change near the end (don't worry, I won't spoil anything). I understand why they made the change, but it still bugged me. I think that they could have kept that part the same, but I don't speak for the production studios. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the movie and would recommend it. And, even though he said he wouldn't watch it, I wonder if Alan Moore did go see it anyway. How could you not?
Weekend before last, I went to Milwaukee for an Anime Convention, along with the Japan Club from St. Norbert College. It was an awesome time. It was no GenCon, of course, but it was still lots of fun. I introduced a couple more people to the greatness that is Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and I was introduced to a few shows myself. I have since downloaded School Rumble and Code Geass, because after seeing the first volume of each of those, I was hooked. There was a video game room where I got to play Street Fighter IV for the first time. That game kicks much ass, and I am determined to buy it as soon as I have the cash (or convince my brother to). I realize that I will never be a "good" player of Street Fighter, as I've never been that great at fighting games, but I plan to play the hell out of it nonetheless. There was also a cosplay contest, and I'm surprised how fun that ended up being. And it's always a pleasure to see people who are much more geeky and shameless than me.
Anyway, that's about all outta me for now. Maybe I'll post something else in the next 2 months. |

Nothing against Ripper Owens, he's a great singer, but Barlow's voice is part of what defines Iced Earth in my mind. Hoorah for Set Abominae and his continued story. |

I've given it lots of thought and it really seems like the best option for me right now. And it's something that I should enjoy doing.
I'll be taking classes starting January 26th. Fortunately, since I already have my Bachelor's Degree, I'll be able to get my teaching certification in just 3 part-time semesters. So, by April of 2010, I'll be all certified and ready to find a job. St. Norbert is a relatively prestigious school around here, and known for their education program. So, hopefully that will give me an edge in getting a job.
Anyway, that's the only real news happening with me lately. That and trying to find a part-time job that's closer to my apartment, so I don't have to keep commuting while also attending classes. |

Even if Starbucks wasn't endorsing a certain candidate, they were still trying to influence the election through incentives. Don't that beat all?
NaNoWriMo. Hit the 10k word mark last night. Right on schedule. Although, I'm starting to feel like I'm running out of steam on the plot. I need to come up with something new to happen, now that I'm beyond my initial story arc.
Other news. Not much. I have my last Chinese class of the semester next Tuesday. Then I will have completed 30 hours of Chinese language instruction. After next semester, I hope to bump that up to 45 hours. And I'm beginning the process of getting my teaching certification through the local college. It's not gonna cost too much, and it'll only take me 3 semesters, so I figured I may as well do it. Being a high school History teacher wouldn't be so bad for a while. And it beats anything else I can do with a BA in History for the time being.

But we still got to do a fair amount of gaming as well, and it was all fun. Definitely going to pre-register for events online next year, though. I already can't wait. When I'm there, I've noticed that I get this feeling like I really belong there. It's like just about everyone there is automatically my friend, even though I don't know them. I think I've decided that from this point on, I'm going to try to make sure to get to GenCon every year. But I'll probably give a full GenCon update soon enough, when I have more time to waste.
For those of you who don't know, I've mostly just been working lately. My D&D game has been going pretty well, and I actually just joined another one on every other Sunday. One of the guys from my game had to quit because his new work schedule interfered. So, he started his own game, which I'm in now, and it's pretty fun. I'm playing an evil Gnome Artificer. The character concept is basically a pyromaniac mad bomber. VERY fun to role-play. *evil grin*
Also, I've been taking another semester of Chinese. I've been learning a lot of characters this time. I know well over 100 different hanzi now. Surely not enough to even come close to reading a newspaper or anything, but I'm making progress at least. It's a very interesting language, though it can be pretty hard sometimes. The tones alone were hell to learn.
I just found out last week that one of the other students in my Chinese class is also a gamer. He's a sophomore at St. Norbert College (where I'm taking the class), and he says he has some other friends who'd be interested in doing some gaming. But apparently since the college is technically a Catholic college, they aren't allowed to make a college-sanctioned club dedicated to gaming. That's just ridiculous. I don't think there's anything in the bible saying D&D is evil. People have some misguided impressions of the hobby.
Well, I guess it's time to get back to studying, so that's all for now. |
